John 14: 1-14

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. (John 14:9, 10 ESV)

Allow me the liberty to unpack this.

Jesus is having to ‘defend’ himself to the disciples who have witnessed amazing things! They witness these things and still ask for “The Father”?

How more blind could they be in this moment?

What I really want to focus on is that in the text above Jesus is in the Father and the Father in him, but there is no Holy spirit because He is about to be introduced in verse 15.

BUT…

verse 12 messes me up

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:12 ESV)

Wait, what?

We are going to do greater than you?
Is this with Just the Father and You, because the Holy Spirit isn’t here yet!
This must have been what the disciples were thinking

Now we know today that The Father, Jesus and The Holy spirit are all together all the time, but the way Jesus speaks of this Comforter coming doesn’t help us understand who you really are Jesus?

It really is amazing to know that we’ve been promised to do greater things on account of His name!

He has trusted us enough to carry His name to the nations and share the Good news of the death, burial and resurrection.

It is my…your… Responsibility to take this message to all who will listen!

What’s Your Personal Vision Statement?

Ever read a vision statement of a vision statement and just think to yourself, wow? Or even I can’t imagine how long it took them to come up with that!

Maybe even you’ve struggled with what you believe your purpose to be. The hardest part may not be what you believe your purpose to be, but how do I tell people about this purpose.

Does it have to look a certain way?
Does it need to be a certain length?
Does it really matter anyway?
My answer to each of these is the same, It is up to you!

You decide how it looks.
You decide how long it is.
You decide what matters most, and you make it count!

What I have now is not at all what I thought mine was for so long, but both are the same.

Originally: “To allow and facilitate breakthrough in the lives of the ordinary.”
Now: “Living by faith, learning through relationships, and loving God with all my heart, soul and strength through service.”

What’s yours?
I’d love to hear it!

Wilderness

What is your ‘wilderness’?

What is your place of isolation where you can focus on what’s most important in life?

For Christians, it may be your time in the morning or evening where you spend time in worship/reading the Word.

For others, it may be your time on the basketball court or out during your morning run.

Whether you are a believer or just here visiting, I believe it is imperative that we have a ‘wilderness’.

We all need that place we can rely on being there when we need it most.

We need to have that place where we will always know when we get there we can realign our thoughts and intentions towards our goals personal ambitions.

Without this place, our vision for what’s ahead becomes clouded and without form.

Without this place, our actions become purposeless and quite often hurtful towards those that we never intended to harm.

Think about where your ‘wilderness’ is and find a new way to incorporate more time there.

If after reading this you realize you are without a wilderness and would like this in your life, decide now that you will create this experience for yourself.

You will thank yourself sooner rather than later!

What Does Worship Pastor John Larson Say About SUCCESSS — congregation of 27,000 and growing

It’s an honor to call this church home.

understandingWORSHIP

If you could get behind the curtain — so to speak — of one of the fastest growing churches in America, what would you see?  What is the key to their success?

I personally love to study churches, to see what lies behind their success or lack of success.  I have been a worship pastor and very passionate about worship for a couple of decades.  I have led crowds of a few to crowds of thousands.  But in the last couple of years, I have been making a transition from being a ”player” to being a “coach”.  Eventually all of us should, at some level, make this transition.  It’s God’s design. Look at any team:  the coach may not be able to play as well as the players (sports, music, debate — any team), yet the coach is still crucial to the success or failure of the program.  The…

Coffee’s Customer

I am really only here because I had a coupon for a medium hot or iced coffee for 99c, let’s get that straight.

It also doesn’t hurt that it’s 0.00009 miles from where I work and I needed a place that was not where I work to get the tons of homework I need done, done.

Yesterday, I toured the new Regional Director for Dunking Donuts, who was not pleasant at all, and coincidentally he is here at this location using it as his “office”.

Now I may still be biased about all of this because I spent three years as a barista for Starbucks and know the core values of their customer service platform, but I can not begin to speak about the lack of customer service I experienced today but have witnessed as I free load off their WiFi : P.

No need to get into the details of any of that, just to say that I can firmly say that I may always favor Starbucks over Dunkin Donuts, regardless of how Howard Schultz may feel about those that buy Starbuck stock.

P.s. I drink my coffee black. Nothing, nada, zip, zilch

Let me put it out there, I L O V E church

ekklēsia: a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly.

I really enjoy the system that church is. I enjoy the gathering of people. The atmosphere of His presence ushered in by worship, divine.

I enjoy hearing messages so that I can learn the flow and presentation of said message.

I really enjoy church experience. I will have the opportunity to go to other churches and learn “their” way, too.

What do you love about your “church”? What do you wish to see your church implement or perhaps alter?

Just pray….Scripture

So often we have prayed for “favor…in the sight of God and man”, but I think if we were to actually quote the scripture correctly we wouldn’t pray that at all. Instead, we would pray “let love and faithfulness never leave you”. This verse is much more about our obedience to Him not what’s in it for us.

As Christians I feel most of our personal time in prayer is nothing more than selfish ambition. I believe that if we were to quote more scripture during times of prayer our motivations for faith would be deeply rooted. I believe that because our prayers have been selfish we are not seeing the fruit we expect and it’s somehow God’s fault. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The verse in its entirety is this: Proverbs 3:3-4

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”

It’s much more clear that when we read and quote scripture accurately what the intentions of the verse are. The verse’s context will also speak volumes for its intent. Remember this: pray God’s word accurately and believe it is for our benefit.
